A large rural fire in the Spanish Sierra de la Corona, in Zamora, which started due to lightning, has yet to be extinguished, signaling this Monday two months after its start.
Fire, in territory included in the Meseta Ibérica Biosphere Reserve, set fire to some 25,000 hectares of forest area and originated from the first heat wave recorded this yeardue to lightning from a storm that caused up to 14 different points of origin in the mountain range (known in Spanish as Sierra da la Culebra).
Subsequently, it was found that on June 15 there were, in practice, two fires of different origin, which started 20 minutes apart, one of them starting from Ferreras de Abajo and burning some 490 hectares, being extinguished after 45 minutes. days. The other originated in Sarracín de Pronto and has not yet died out.
This fire, which the Fire Department has not yet completely extinguished, although it was controlled nine days after it started, affected a total of 15,002 hectares of trees, 8,258 hectares of shrubs, 813 hectares of pasture, 452 hectares of agricultural land and 211 hectares of other types of landaccording to data from the Fire Extinguishing Service of the Junta de Castilla y León.
Just over a month after this fire, on July 17, another fire broke out in the area, also caused by lightning, in which a forest firefighter and a rancher died. The flames burned some 31,500 hectares, according to measurements made with satellites of the European Copernicus system.
This fire is still considered active by the Fire Extinction Service of the Junta de Castilla y León 28 days after it started in Losacio.
In addition, on July 24 another fire started in the area, in Losacino, which was controlled after burning some 1,600 hectares, of which some 190 are trees, 451 bushes, 49 pastures, 849 agricultural land and 55 are related to other types . of land
