The White House has announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is to attend a G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends.

The US National Security Council noted: “As US President Joe Biden has publicly stated, he does not believe that Putin should attend the G20 summit at a time when he is at war with Ukraine. The United States believes that Zelensky should also be present.”

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said he expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the November summit.

Biden has previously called for Russia to be excluded from the G-20 because of its military operation in Ukraine, but acknowledged that other members of the group might disagree with him.

The White House thought that Washington privately told Indonesia that it would not like to invite Russia to the summit, but the Kremlin confirmed that Putin had received an invitation to attend.
