Video footage shows breathtaking scenes of a luxury yacht sinking off the coast of southern Italy after hitting obstacles late on Saturday, August 20, 2022.
While the yacht was sailing through the Gulf of Scyllas, it ran into trouble and the captain belatedly called for rescue, without lifeboats being able to rescue him, while an investigation into what caused the luxury yacht sank in is being done
The Saga, built in Monaco in 2007, was heading east from the Gallipoli Peninsula to Milazzo, Sicily on Saturday when disaster struck.
Coast Guard vessels arrived from Port Croton and found water leaking on the side of the yacht, about nine nautical miles from Marina Catanzaro.
The yacht’s four passengers and one crew member, all Italian, immediately got out, leaving four crew members, including the captain, behind to try to save her.
A tug was then dispatched from Croton Harbor to attempt to tow the yacht Saga into port, arriving in the early hours of Sunday 21 August.
Although the rescue operation continued without interruption, the yacht veered sharply to starboard while heading to port.
Images captured by the Coast Guard show what happened next, as the stern of the vessel disappeared beneath the waves as the water rose to the surface.
This forced lifeguards to stop transporting him as he was upside down and sinking fast.
It is worth noting that the Saga yacht completely sank at around 1am on Sunday, August 22, while 4 rescuers were taken to safety before the boat completely disappeared at sea.
