Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-Ochi’s office pending a case that could see him fired.

The court agreed to hear a case brought by opposition parties, saying Prayut, who came to power in a 2014 coup, had reached the limit of his eight-year term.

Prayut, who is also defense minister, was also accused of spying on political opponents with Pegasus spyware and misappropriating the state budget. The opposition also accused Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Anutin Charnvirakul of legalizing the use of cannabis without proper control.

Prayut defended his government’s reputation, noting that “Thai’s economy is stable despite high energy prices and high inflation” and said, “In the remaining 250 days of the government’s life, I insist on doing everything in my power to country out of the crisis “as soon as possible.”
