“The war against Ukraine is unjustifiable and unacceptable. It is a clear violation of international law and all the principles on which our organization was founded.. It must stop immediately,” Rau declared in a statement, marking six months into the conflict.
“The unprovoked war that the Russian Federation launched against Ukraine has caused untold destruction and suffering. We have seen thousands of innocent people die in indiscriminate attacks throughout Ukraine,” said the OSCE chairman, who holds the post on a rotating basis.
The Polish foreign minister, who this year holds the chairmanship of the OSCE, also stressed that the Russian attacks left millions of civilians without access to essential resources and caused “the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II“.
Rau warned of the risk of human trafficking of women and children fleeing the conflict and condemned the forced deportation of Ukrainian citizens to Russia.
Finally, Rau urged the 57 OSCE member states to work together for peace and security and reaffirmed the OSCE’s commitment to the Ukrainian people.
