The American Reuters agency reported that “Taiwan intends to deploy a defense system to repel threats from Chinese drones.”

China had previously threatened to take “strong action” if Canada intervened in Taiwan, a week after reports that a Canadian parliamentary delegation was planning to visit the island later this year to explore trade opportunities.

“We urge the Canadian side to uphold the One China principle and respect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Chinese Embassy in Canada said in a statement. “China will take firm and decisive action against any country that tries to interfere or encroach on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” she added.

Liberal MP Judy Sgrove said last week that members of the Canada-Taiwan parliamentary “friendship group,” which receives no administrative or financial backing from the Canadian parliament, are planning to visit the self-governing island in October.
