White House: Nuclear agreement is closer than ever

The White House said Wednesday it believes revival of the Iran nuclear deal is closer than ever, while stressing U.S. concerns about Tehran’s support for groups in Iraq.

“We believe we are closer than ever to returning to the deal because Iran has given up some of its demands,” the White House said at its daily briefing. But he did not provide more details in this regard.

He continued: We believe that returning to the nuclear agreement is the best solution to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

He said: We submitted our answer to the European Union and now we are waiting for the Iranians’ answer.

Regarding Iran’s activities in the region, the White House said: We have always been clear about our rejection and concern about Iran’s support for armed groups in Iraq.

Al Baid’s speech comes hours after Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said his country needs stronger guarantees from Washington to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.

Negotiations on the nuclear deal appear to have reached an advanced stage, as Iran is now considering Washington’s response to the EU’s draft final text in early August, with the aim of breaking the deadlock between the two sides.

But the safeguards issue is delaying a nuclear deal, according to a Reuters analysis.

Tehran is pressing for Washington’s commitment to end the UN agency’s investigation into traces of uranium found at three undeclared sites before the deal is fully implemented.

On the other hand, Washington and its partners reject this position, saying that ending the investigation is possible only when Iran gives satisfactory answers to the Vienna-based agency.
