Portugal’s health minister has announced his resignation due to the condition of an Indian tourist visiting the southern European country.
Last Tuesday, Home Affairs Minister Marta Temido tendered her resignation hours after the news of the death of a young Indian tourist who was pregnant on a trip to Portugal and could not get a hospital bed.
According to the Indian Express newspaper, the 34-year-old Indian tourist died after suffering a heart attack while being transferred from a hospital that was not available due to a lack of beds.
Tamedo’s resignation comes after heavy criticism of the closure of emergency services in Portugal, the shortage of doctors in hospitals and the rise in cases of pregnant women suffering complications due to the National Health Service’s failure to respond.
According to local media, this Indian woman was 31 weeks pregnant and was transferred to Santa Maria Hospital, one of the largest medical centers in Portugal, after complaining of shortness of breath.
After her condition was stabilized, the hospital decided to transfer her to another hospital, Sao Francisco Xavier, as the neonatal unit at the first hospital was full, reports said. Reports indicate that he had a heart attack on the way and died.
