Elias Von Burgsdorff is “speechwriter” of the president of the European Commission – one of the many consultancies that writes her speeches – and that is why she is having a particularly busy few days: in two weeks, on September 14, Ursula Von der Leyen will deliver her State of the Union Address.
At the Arquipélago Contemporary Art Center, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, in the Azores, Von Burgsdorff explains the complexity crafting the speech and reveals to SummerCEmp participants some of von der Leyen’s strategies. The fact of speaking several languages during the same speech, for example, makes the speakers of those languages feel represented. “If I could, I would also speak Portuguese.”, he assures.
Elias Von Burgsdorff, a German citizen born in South Africa, explains to SummerCEmp participants that writing a State of the Union address for the President of the European Commission is a simple process:
Our work begins three or four months in advance. Right now, this is the ‘tipping point,’ the time we’re writing, which requires the most work.”
