US President Joe Biden refused to label Russia a “terrorist” despite the high tension that has clouded US-Russian relations since Moscow began military operations in Ukraine seven months ago.
Asked whether Russia should be classified as a state sponsor of terrorism, he answered unequivocally: “No,” in Tuesday’s press briefing at the White House, according to Reuters.
This came after Moscow warned yesterday that the designation would lead to the collapse of US-Russian relations.
Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that this action could lead to the severance of diplomatic relations, and said that her country is ready for any change in the US position.
While some American representatives from the Democratic and Republican parties have been pushing for months to include Russia in that list or classification.
About a month ago, the US Senate passed a resolution asking the State Department to recognize Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism” and to consider “the actions of the Russian government as a sponsor of terrorist acts.”
It should be noted that there are currently four countries that the United States considers to be among the countries that support terrorism, i.e. North Korea, Iran, Cuba, and Syria. Exports and … are facing. defense sales, and specific controls on the export of dual-use items, in addition to various financial restrictions.
