The announcement was made on Monday, but Liz Truss will not officially become prime minister until the following day. The militants of the Conservative Party chose her as the new leader of the party, with a majority of 57% of the votes, rejecting Rishi Sunak. But everything will become official only on Tuesday.
Liz Truss is the new British Prime Minister, with 57.4% of the vote. “I campaigned as a Conservative and I will govern as a Conservative”
The day starts early, with Boris Johnson’s last speech as Prime Minister, between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. (Lisbon and London time). Boris will speak outside 10 Downing Street for possibly the last time, 60 days after he acknowledged there that the party no longer wants him as leader. He then proceeds to a final audience with Queen Elizabeth II.
Then Liz Truss enters the scene, also to meet the Queen and officially become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. With a first: the meeting will not take place at Buckingham Palace, as usual, but at Balmoral, Scotland, where Elizabeth II is currently staying.
According to The Times, Truss will then return to London to enter Downing Street as prime minister for the first time, later on Tuesday. At 4:00 p.m., he will give his first speech to the nation at the door of Nº10. He will then receive the nuclear codes and listen briefings about national security. Calls to various foreign leaders follow, and Truss has already announced that his first call will be to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
During the afternoon the composition of the new government will be announced, but the new ministers will not have their first meeting until Wednesday morning. And that will be another busy day: at 12:30 p.m., Liz Truss will face her first weekly debate in the House of Commons.
