White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in part of a Bloomberg interview published Wednesday that China’s aggression in Taiwan “remains a clear threat” and China is taking a more aggressive stance towards Taiwan. Sullivan also said the administration is concerned about some of the laws in Congress aimed at strengthening US support for Taiwan, but views other parts positively.
“I think there is a clear threat that an unexpected military situation could arise around Taiwan,” Sullivan said. And the People’s Republic of China has de facto declared as an official policy that it has not removed the issue of the occupation of Taiwan from the agenda, and that it remains one of the options for Taiwan’s reunification. Their position has changed over time in terms of the actions they took with their armies to disrupt the status quo and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
“America’s stance remains firm and consistent, the One China Policy, the Taiwan Relations Act, the three joint communiqués we negotiated with China in the 1970s and 80s, from our point of view, there is no unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. . We continue to believe that and will continue to resist any attempt to forcefully change the status quo.”
Host David Rubinstein later asked, “Now, with a bill now passing through Congress that restricts current US support for Taiwan, has the administration taken a stand against this bill?” she asked.
Sullivan said, “Actually later today, literally today, I’ll have an opportunity to go to the Hill to talk to some members about this law. I’d rather put it on them before I put it on TV. I will say that there are elements that are effective and reliable enough to increase the security of. There are other elements that worry us a little.
