The school year in France started with some 4,000 missing teachers and increases for those who enter the race that could lead to a general mobilization on September 29.
“It seems to me that the State is also very interested in hiring teachers because it is much cheaper. I was a contract teacher for many years and I know there was a place for career teachers, but for economic reasons they preferred to have contract teachers,” a Portuguese teacher who works in French national education in the Paris region told Lusa.
With extensive experience as a contractor, this teacher, who asked not to be identified, recently passed the contest to access a teaching career and says that the dependency of contracted teachers is several years and that she was not surprised by the lack of teachers. announced at the beginning of the school year.
This lack of around four thousand teachers led to accelerated interviews in various regions of France, specifically in the Paris region. According to reports from various media, he managed to be hired as a teacher from preschool to high school in a 30-minute interview and without any training or connection with the school, just a degree.
“Hired teachers don’t write a letter and get hired. You have to send your CV, our experience and then there is an interview with an inspector, very similar to what you do when you pass the competition. Until now, these meetings have always existed”, describes the teacher with whom Agência Lusa spoke.
In an interview, the new French education minister, Pap Ndiaye, who has been in office since June, said inexperienced teachers hired will receive four days of training and follow-up throughout the year. This follow-up is questioned by the most experienced teachers, since it will weigh on their already overloaded schedule.
“These inexperienced colleagues are sent to the most difficult schools, with discipline problems. If an inexperienced person arrives at these schools, he will seek the advice of the teachers who are already there and they will be the ones who will train them, ”said the teacher.
To make a teaching career attractive again in France, Emmanuel Macron guaranteed that a teacher’s salary at the beginning of his career will not be less than 2,000 euros net, a threshold currently only accessed by teachers with 13 or 14 years of experience. . According to Pap Ndiaye, this would lead to a general appreciation of the salaries of more experienced teachers.
However, the place where teachers teach must also be taken into account and reflected in salaries, defends the teacher.
“One of the things that is often talked about is that a teacher who works in Paris has, for example, the same salary as a teacher who works in Clermont-Ferrand. [a mais de 400 quilómetros de distância, no centro de França]. Now, the expenses are not the same because renting a house is not the same, nor is the price of things the same. That is why there are many teachers who want to leave Paris and many who live in precarious conditions”, explained the Parisian teacher.
All these difficulties at the start of the school year have led the unions to make a call to join the general strike on September 29, which will take place before the presentation of the General State Budgets for 2023.
In some schools the strikes have already begun, with teachers supported by the parents of the students, who demand classes with fewer students and more teachers.
