New York City Corrections officials said Monday that Mark David Chapman, the man who shot Beatles star John Lennon, had been denied parole for the 12th time.
Chapman, 67, was told he would be behind bars after appearing before the parole board in late August, according to the state Department of Corrections and Public Safety.
In 1981, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting Lennon five times outside his Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980.
The legendary singer-songwriter was walking to their apartment in New York’s Central Park with his wife, Yoko Ono, when he was shot.
Earlier that day, Lennon had signed a copy of his newly released Double Fantasy album for Chapman.
The AP reported that state officials have yet to release transcripts of Chapman’s final board meeting, but Chapman has repeatedly expressed regret at previous parole hearings.
Chapman described his actions as “heinous” at the 2020 hearing and said he would “have no complaints” if they decide to keep him in jail for the rest of his life.
“I killed him… because he was very, very, very famous, and that was the only reason, and I glorified myself very, very, very much. It was very selfish,” Chapman said at the time.
Lennon’s wife repeatedly requested that Chapman not be released from prison.
