Turkish airstrikes in Syria kill three

Turkish airstrikes in northern Syria on positions held by regime forces and Kurdish forces on Sunday caused three deaths, a Syrian non-governmental organization (NGO) said.

The strikes hit positions of the Syrian army and the US-backed, Kurdish-controlled Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near the city of Kobani, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced.

All three people who were killed in those attacks were wearing military uniforms, according to the UK-based NGO, which has a large network of sources in Syria. The Observatory also reports several injuries, some of them serious, but did not provide exact figures. According to the NGO, this morning, Turkish forces came under fire from Kobané, not far from the border.

At war since 2011, Syria is fragmented due to the intervention of multiple groups and foreign powers in the conflict. Between 2016 and 2019, the Turkish army launched three major operations in northern Syria against Kurdish militias and organizations.

Regime forces have been deployed to areas controlled by Kurdish fighters under deals designed to contain a new Turkish operation.

Since July, Turkish drones have increasingly targeted areas controlled by Syrian Kurdish forces on the one hand, who control most of the northeast of the country, according to the Observatory and Kurdish authorities, but it is rare for Turkish border operations to cause the death. of pro-regime soldiers.

The United States fears that the Turkish operation in Syria will endanger the fight against the Islamic State
