Rock-throwing and improvised explosives protesters clashed with security forces at a military post in Mexico during a Friday protest against the disappearance of 43 students in 2014.

Officials in the Mexican capital indicated that “about 40 security personnel were injured during the clashes, and hundreds of demonstrators removed an iron fence and attempted to storm Camp No. 1 in Mexico, with some of them chanting describing the security forces as ‘murderers’ on the latest demonstration, timed to coincide with the eighth anniversary of the disappearance of 43 students.

Authorities responded by using water cannons to disperse demonstrators, with the standoff coming a day after about 12 police officers were injured during a demonstration in front of prosecutors demanding justice for the missing students.

Earlier, Agence France-Presse reported that “relatives of students organized a rally in front of the Israeli embassy, demanding the extradition of the former head of the Prosecutor’s Office of Criminal Investigations, Thomas Zeron, who is wanted in connection with one of the worst human rights tragedies in the country. This former high-ranking official fled to Israel, where he asked for asylum.”
