The late British Queen Elizabeth II’s relationship with her granddaughter Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was fraught with tension. And the secrets of this relationship were revealed after the death of the queen on September 8.
A new book, The New Royalists: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown, by Katie Nicholl examines the tensions that gripped Buckingham Palace in the weeks and months leading up to Meghan and Harry’s wedding in 2018.
And the British newspaper “Daily Mail” published excerpts from the book, which show that the Queen “blamed” Meghan when planning the wedding.
Nicole quoted an unnamed source as saying that Meghan got “very upset” with a palace staff member when she tasted a dish on the wedding menu because it was supposed to be vegetarian but tasted like eggs.
The atmosphere was “tense” during Meghan’s conversation with the palace staff until the Queen intervened.
The source told Nicole: “Suddenly the Queen came in and said, ‘Meghan! In this family, we don’t talk to people like that!”
The book does not mention what Meghan said that prompted the Queen’s intervention.
The book states that the Queen was surprised by Meghan’s choice of pure white for her wedding dress, suggesting that this was not Meghan’s first marriage.
The source said: “The Queen believes that if a woman has been married before, she should wear white on her wedding day, which Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (now Queen Consort) did at her wedding to Prince Charles (now King). “
The book also noted the controversy over which tiara Meghan is allowed to borrow from the Queen to wear on her wedding day.
Not only Meghan and the Queen, but Prince William’s wife (the current heir) Kate Middleton also had a disagreement over whether Kate’s daughter Princess Charlotte should wear pantyhose under her dress for the ceremony.
In her famous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan revealed that Kate made her cry the week of her wedding over a dispute over Charlotte’s wedding dress.
Eager to support anyone marrying into her family, the Queen did her best to get to know the new Duchess. She knew that Harry had not yet met Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, and that Meghan had not yet spoken to her father.
The book added that the Queen rarely interfered in Meghan’s family matters, but made sure to discuss it with Harry and Meghan.
A close family friend said: “The Queen believed that Meghan should work things out with her father and that Harry should meet Thomas before the wedding.”
The source added: “The queen thought that this matter could have been handled better.”
And last year, Harry and Meghan announced they were giving up all their official titles after confirming to the Queen that they were stepping down from the Royal Family for good and moving to the United States.
