The US Embassy in Moscow recommended that American citizens in Russia urgently leave Moscow, warning that they could be detained if they participate in protests.

The embassy said in a statement that “U.S. citizens should not visit Russia. Residents or travelers in Russia must leave Russian territory immediately with limited opportunities for commercial travel. If you want to leave Russia, you must prepare yourself for your departure as soon as possible.” … The ability of the US Embassy to provide assistance and facilities to US citizens, including access to transportation, could suddenly become limited.”

The US Embassy also warned that individuals with dual Russian-American citizenship could be recruited as part of the partial mobilization in Russia, which would prevent these citizens from leaving Russia.

At the same time, the embassy pointed out that the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech in Russia is not guaranteed, urging “to avoid any political or social protests and to photograph law enforcement officers at these protests.” Russian authorities have arrested an American citizen who participated in the demonstrations.”
