Bolsonaro accuses Lula of being “the head of a big gang.” “Pau face”, replies Lula in the final debate

“Head of a big gang”, “author of robbery” and “traitor to the country” vs. ‘blatant liar’, ‘blatant’ and ‘crazy’. In the final debate between the main candidates for the Brazilian elections, broadcast this Thursday by TV Globo, Jair Bolsonaro and Lula da Silva exchanged harsh accusations. Among the multiplier rights of responses and insults, the president of the Brazilian Republic and the candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT) put on the table issues such as corruption, handling of the pandemic and even gender ideology, but always at the attack.

The debate began with Ciro Gomes, third in the polls, criticizing Lula da Silva, recalling unemployment and family indebtedness in the PT governments. In response, the candidate points out that Ciro Gomes himself was part of the PT government and denied the figures. I find him nervous. My governments were moments of social conquests. People bought a television, a refrigerator, a car and even ate steak with a barbecue,” argued Lula, who said that Brazil was, at that time, viewed with “pride” in the United States, China and Argentina.

Can Lula win in the first round?

After a question from candidate Father Kelmon —who returned, as he did in the second debate, to support Bolsonaro—, the president affirmed that Brazil cannot go back to being a “kleptocracy in which robbery reigns”. “Lula was the leader of a large gang. We cannot continue to be the country of theft”, criticized the head of state, who stressed that the PT candidate continues to try to “destroy the family”, making “children interested in sex”.

“Have a minimum of honesty”, responded Lula da Silva in a right of reply: “Did I set up a gang? Bolsonaro looks at himself in the mirror. The PT candidate recalled the alleged corruption scandal related to the purchase of vaccines. “Have nerve. Lying is ugly for a president, that is not possible”.

Again on the attack, Bolsonaro called his opponent an “ex-convict”, raising the tone: “He is a liar, a traitor to the country.” Rejecting any accusation of corruption, the president said that the one who “stole millions of companies” was Lula da Silva: “What a shame.”

“It is crazy to have a President of the Republic with this gall,” lamented Lula da Silva, who guaranteed that – on October 2 – “people will surely send Bolsonaro home“. “Poker face“, accused the PT candidate.

Felipe D’Ávila also criticized, in several speeches, what he says is the “corruption” of the Lula governments, who asked for more “reliable data”. Soraya Thronicke followed the same strategy as Felipe D’Ávila and goes so far as to emphasize that she “rose up” to put an end to the problems generated by the PT governments. One of the quirks of the debate came when the candidate failed to pronounce Father Kelmon’s name correctly: “Father Kelson. Kelvin. Priest Candidate”, and then accused him of being a “June Party Father” and asked if he “wasn’t afraid of going to hell”.

For her part, Simone Tebet denounced the “hate speech” in the debate, as well as the “polarization” that “is not helping Brazil”. She also focused on “delayed surgeries” in “public health” stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are going to increase the money in the national health service. Let’s equip the hospitals. And we have to look at the Holy Houses.”

Simone Tebet questioned Jair Bolsonaro about the Amazon, which “was burned and devastated” during the term of the current president: “It was the worst in the history of Brazil.” “Instead of taking care of the forests, his government took care of the explorers.” The head of state rejected the criticism: “It is not true. Periodically it catches fire in the region. In Brazil we have two thirds of the forests preserved as they were when Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived.”

“You lie so much that you believe so many lies,” accused Simone Tebet, who recalled the lack of rain in the Amazon region. “Then the lack of rain is my responsibility,” replied Jair Bolsonaro, who recalled that, at the beginning of the war, he met with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to negotiate the issue of fertilizers. “Farmers are happy. I brought peace and tranquility to the field.”

Father Kelmon, for his part, drew attention to public universities, which turn young people into “militant leftists.” “The universities have become a nest of people who militate for ideologies, which go against the values of Christianity. The left made the university a way for the little soldiers to defend this ideology.”
