Protesters against Russia’s attack on Ukraine painted the Russian Consulate in New York with red paint on Friday morning.
Police said they received a 911 call that paint had been splattered on the facade of the Manhattan consulate.
A police spokesman said the investigation into the possible incident is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
The bright red color appeared hours before Putin announced the annexation of four regions of Ukraine by his army.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the US-led NATO to speed up Ukraine’s membership, while international leaders including President Joe Biden condemned Russia’s accession.
Rosie Morse, a retiree who lives in the neighborhood near the consulate, said the paint “looks like a work of art.”
“But it’s meant to express our feelings towards Putin, and I can’t say I don’t agree,” he added.
“It’s vandalism, but it shows how aware New Yorkers are that Putin is killing people,” said Romain Paulin, 34, as he walked past the consulate.
