Since the beginning of the war, Vladimir Putin has more than once threatened to use nuclear weapons to defend Russian territory. Russia’s president said he was ready to use such weapons, raising fears that he could use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
With Russian forces losing ground in Ukraine, especially in the town of Lyman, it was Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s turn to argue that Moscow should consider using limited-range nuclear weapons in the invaded country.
Smaller than strategic nuclear weapons, the tactics were designed for use on the battlefield or for limited attacks, for example to destroy a column of tanks or other military installations.
According to the BBC, these types of small nuclear warheads are designed to destroy enemy targets without causing widespread spread of radioactivity. With an explosive power capacity of 10 to 100 kilotons of dynamite, these weapons also called “low power”.
