Guilherme Ferraz Filho was one of the many Brazilians who gathered on Avenida Paulista tonight, ready to celebrate the very probable victory of Lula da Silva in this first round and, who knows, his election this Sunday, mathematically possible according to some polls. A few hours before the start of the count, however, he showed some nervousness, as Jair Bolsonaro stubbornly stayed ahead in the vote count: “Bolsonaro surprised. He assumed that his vote would be even lower than the polls indicated. It’s still a celebration, but I’m afraid of what might happen.“, the economist told UOL.
Hours later, Guilherme breathed a sigh of relief. With the arrival of the results from the Northeast and from the big cities of the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, Lula advanced and consolidated her victory this Sunday, winning almost 48% of the votes, against 43% of Bolsonaro. The dream of elections resolved in the first round, however, was fading. And with a result for the opposition above what most of the polls predicted, in addition to positive results in Congress for many Bolsonarists, the “fear” that Guilherme spoke of was accentuated among the supporters of the PT candidate.
