UN Secretary-General António Guterres explained that “the commitments made at the G-20 summit to combat the effects of climate change came too late.”

In a press statement, he pointed out that “the upcoming COP27 climate summit will be critical to the global response to climate change”, stressing that “there is still a long way to go and there are many things that need to be done to combat the effects of climate change”.

Guterres stressed that “we are fighting a life-and-death struggle to stay safe in the present and be able to survive in the future”, noting that “we are in a game-changing moment and that requires us to search for a compromise between developing countries and countries with emerging market economies”.

Egypt is due to host the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change “COP27” in Sharm el-Sheikh in November 2022.
