At least 18 people were killed and two injured, including the mayor, in an armed attack Wednesday in Tutulapan, Guerrero, Mexico’s Attorney General Sandra Luz Valdovinos said.

Conrado Mendoza, the leftist mayor of this city of 4,300, was among those killed in a daytime attack in this region of Mexico where drug-related violence has been observed. Police sources said the victims also included his father, who was mayor many years ago.

The prosecutor did not add any details. But the Mexican media reported that the attack was the work of drug traffickers from the state of Jalisco (western), who are associated with the powerful Jalisco Generation Nueva (Jalisco New Generation) cartel.

Etelect notes that 94 mayors have been killed in Mexico since 2000. About 340,000 people have been forcibly killed in Mexico since 2006, when the government deployed the army to fight drug gangs.
