Following Russia’s devastating missile strikes, US President Joe Biden pledged to his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that the US would provide advanced air systems to Ukraine.
Biden spoke to Zelensky by phone to assure continued US support and condemn Russia’s “stupid attacks” on civilian targets.
A White House statement explaining the phone call said that “President Biden pledged to continue providing necessary support for our defense, including Ukraine’s advanced air defense systems.”
The White House added that Biden told Zelensky that the United States and its allies and partners would continue to impose sanctions on Russia, hold it accountable for its war crimes and crimes, and provide security, economic and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
The new promises came after Russia fired more than 80 long-range missiles at infrastructure in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on Monday.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened that if Kyiv invades Russian territory again, he will respond more severely, he said.
Russia’s strikes today came in response to last Saturday’s attack on the Crimean bridge, which connects the Russian mainland to the peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.
The United States has provided more than $16.8 billion in security aid since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 and has imposed a wide range of economic sanctions against Moscow for its actions in Ukraine.
