Costa on going to Qatar: “We are not going to support the regime or the violation of human rights, but rather the team”

The prime minister said tonight that anyone who attends national team matches in Qatar will not “support the Qatari regime, the violation of human rights in Qatar and discrimination against women in Qatar. Let’s support the team, which carries the flag”. During a press conference with Lula da Silva, in São Bento, António Costa faced the bail to the country’s regime where the Soccer World Cup takes place, which may mean the visit of senior representatives of the Portuguese State.

The President of the Republic had already ruled on the issue and the Prime Minister went to meet him in the de-dramatization of the case and in the separation that he also makes between support for the selection and any acceptance that this may mean regarding what is happening in Qatar or in other regimes: “We support the selection in Qatar, in France, India, China, Russia, wherever you are????????

Marcelo does not give up going to Qatar and leaves the decision in the hands of Parliament

????????The World Cup is where it’s at and we all have a position on what Qatar is”, Costa began by saying in response to the question and added: “But what makes the team in the World Cup is that it was one of the few that managed to qualify”.

He then pointed to Lula, next to him, saying the “only difference” he has with Brazil’s president-elect is over “who will win the final.”

It should be remembered that this Thursday, in response to the violation of human rights in Qatar and his presence at a national team match in the country, the President of the Republic responded: “Qatar does not respect human rights. All the construction of the stadiums and such… but hey, let’s forget about that. It’s objectionable, but let’s focus on the team. We started very well and finished very well”.

This Friday he took the decision on his trip to the country to support the national soccer team to the Assembly of the Republic, where the PS and the PSD already guaranteed the approval of the trip.

Parliament sets a meeting for Monday to authorize Marcelo to go to Qatar. PS and PSD have already obtained approval

Both the President of the Republic, as well as the Prime Minister and the President of the Assembly of the Republic are going to Qatar, on November 24, to witness the first match of the national soccer team (against Ghana) in the World Cup.
