The 310th day of the war was marked by Belarus’ accusation that Ukraine is “trying to provoke a regional conflict”, after a missile fell on its territory on Thursday. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on the Alliance countries to supply Ukraine with more weapons. The Russian president told his Chinese counterpart that he wants to strengthen military cooperation and invited Xi Jinping to visit Moscow in the spring.

What happened during the afternoon?
- The Russian Football Federation (RFS) has made the decision to remain in UEFA and challenge the European body to create a “working group” with a view to its reinsertion in the official competitions of national teams and clubs.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin sent Happy New Year wishes to the leaders of Syria, China and others close to the Kremlin, but not to those of the United States, Germany and France. “These counterparts did not send us any greetings. In fact, we have no contact with them,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
What happened in the morning?
- The Secretary of State of the Security Council of Belarus, Alexander Volfovich, accused Ukraine of trying to “provoke a regional conflict”, considering it “unlikely” that a Ukrainian air defense missile had entered Belarusian space by accident.
- Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russia may try to conquer the entirety of the Donetsk region by the New Year. In the speech that he usually publishes at night, the Ukrainian president warned: “The enemy has not abandoned the crazy idea of capturing the Donetsk region. Now [os russos] they are setting a task for the New Year.”
- Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping met this Friday by videoconference to discuss “bilateral relations” between Russia and China, “regional issues” and their “strategic partnerships.”
- In an eight-minute conversation, Putin told his Chinese counterpart that he intends to “strengthen cooperation between the Russian and Chinese Armed Forces” and invited him to visit Moscow in the spring. The Chinese president told his Russian counterpart that the road to peace talks in Ukraine “will not be easy.”
- The latest death toll from Russian airstrikes in 10 regions of Ukraine on Thursday points to four civilian deaths and eight wounded. These numbers do not include deaths that have occurred on the combatant’s body. Three of the deaths were in Kharkiv and one in Donetsk.
- Ukraine said on Friday it had repelled an overnight attack by explosive drones launched by Russia, less than 24 hours after fresh airstrikes hit the country’s power infrastructure, depriving millions of Ukrainians of electricity.
- Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, called on the Alliance countries to supply Ukraine with more weapons. In an interview published this Friday, Jens Stoltenberg said: “I ask allies to do more. It is in our security interest to make sure Ukraine prevails and Putin doesn’t win.”
