The next president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, will go to Portugal on a state visit and for a Portuguese-Brazilian summit between April 22 and 25, the Portuguese head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, announced this Friday.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists in a hotel in Brasilia, where he arrived this Friday to represent the Portuguese State in the inauguration of Lula da Silva as president of Brazil, which will take place on Sunday, January 1, 2023.
“The meeting in Portugal is already scheduled, from April 22 to 25, with the summit between President Lula and the Portuguese Prime Minister and the state visit, at my invitationwhich culminates with the participation in the ceremony on April 25”, he stated.
The Portuguese president added that on that occasion it should also be done “finally delivery” of the Camões Award “has a long time to go to three winners in recent years”, one of whom is the Brazilian singer Chico Buarque.
As president-elect of Brazil, Lula da Silva already visited Portugal, between November 18 and 19, after having participated in the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27), in Egypt. On that occasion, he was received by the Portuguese Head of State and Prime Minister, António Costa, in Lisbon.
On Monday, the day after taking office, Lula da Silva will receive the Portuguese head of state, in Brasilia, in a meeting that will include delegations from both countries.
When he visited Brazil in July of this year and in 2021, the Portuguese president met with Lula da Silva in São Paulo and with other former presidents of Brazil.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who already served two terms as President of Brazil, between 2003 and 2011, was re-elected on October 30, in the second round of the Brazilian presidential election, with 50.9% of the vote, defeating the head of the Brazilian state head, Jair Bolsonaro.
That night, shortly after the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Tribunal declared the election mathematically defined, the Portuguese head of state congratulated Lula da Silva and expressed his certainty that his mandate “will correspond to a promising period in fraternal relations” with Portugal.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced in September, when the electoral campaign was taking place, that he intended to be present at the inauguration of the next president of Brazil.
