To calm the situation in Ukraine, which could end in a global conflict or a nuclear war, it is crucial to recognize Russian interests. This is the position defended by former Ukrainian deputy Viktor Medvedchuk, an ally of the Russian president accused of “high treason” by the Ukrainian authorities.

In an article published in Russia’s Izvestia newspaper, his first since he was released in a kyiv-Moscow prisoner exchange, Medvedchuk took a hard look at the fighting in Ukraine, examining its origins and sharing his predictions for how it might evolve.

“The beginning of a new war is usually linked to the end of the previous one”, begins by writing that the political decision reached at the end of the Cold War to build a world without wars has failed and world politics has returned to square one. In the article, titled “The Ukrainian Syndrome: Anatomy of a Modern Military Confrontation,” he envisions only two solutions: an escalation of the conflict or a scenario in which both sides are heard.

“There are only two exits. By sliding further into world war and nuclear conflict or by renewing efforts to defuse tensions again, it is necessary to take into account the interests of both parties”, he refers. However, he points out that “politically recognizing” that Russia has its own interests is a key point.

The pro-Russian tycoon also writes that the war in Ukraine could escalate, dragging other European countries down, or remain localized and “resolved”. But for now, the Western countries that support Ukraine’s military operations do not allow this latest outcome.

Medvedchuk believes that it is necessary to create a political movement for peace, without the intervention of western countries. “Perhaps, to save the country, Ukrainians need to build their own democracy and open up to dialogue without the conditioning of Western trustees, whose participation can be harmful and destructive.”

The former deputy also criticized President Volodymyr Zelensky, who last week revoked his citizenship. “He promised peace, but became the personification of war,” he shot.

“Having won power under the rhetoric of pacification, [Zelensky] is taking an extremely radical position. If he had held that position at the beginning of the electoral campaign, nobody would have elected him president, ”he added.

Viktor Medvedchuk is known for his closeness to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who chose him as godfather to one of his daughters. He is the man the Russian leader wanted to see as the Kremlin’s go-between in Ukraine, a result that did not materialize with his arrest in April 2022.

Detained for five months, Medvedchuk was released in a prisoner exchange at the end of September. Moscow secured his release in exchange for 200 Ukrainian soldiers.
