The Angolan foreign minister on Wednesday asked his Russian counterpart for a ceasefire with Ukraine, while Lavrov, who is in Luanda, recalled Moscow’s solidarity with Angola during the civil war and blamed Ukraine for the conflict.
Téte António and Serguei Lavrov head the delegations of the two countries, which are holding this Wednesday the first bilateral meeting within the framework of the visit of the head of Russian diplomacy to the country, as part of a series of contacts with African partners.
In a speech that preceded the meeting between the two delegations, Téte António reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen and improve the ties of friendship and cooperation that unite the two countries, but spoke of the threat that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict represents for world peace. and insisted on finding a solution through dialogue
“We will still have the opportunity to continue addressing this issue, taking into account your experience we will be very attentive to hear your analysis of this dispute,” Téte António told Sergei Lavrov, encouraging the Russian authorities to “give a chance to recovery of the status and prestige of the countryestablishing, as the Angolan President defended, a definitive ceasefire that can restore a climate of world peace”.
Lavrov, in turn, noted that “good relations between Russia and Angola are not subject to geopolitical vicissitudes and are based on the spirit of solidarity and mutual support.”
“The Angolan people are well aware of the price of independence, the price of the free exercise of the traditional rights of all Angolans.”said the head of Russian diplomacy, who blamed Ukraine for the conflict.
Russia was one of the main supporters of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, in power) in the Angolan civil war.
While the Russian minister was speaking, the journalists accompanying the meeting were informed that they would have to leave the room, a situation that made Lavrov question the withdrawal of the press.
According to Mirex officials, Téte António indicated that the journalists could remain in the room, but Russian embassy personnel contradicted the guidance, so they all communication professionals ended up abandoning the room where the bilateral meeting is still taking place, which should be followed by a press conference.
