The Ukrainian sea beaches will be closed due to the laying of mines and the danger this represents. However, river beaches and estuaries will remain open.
The governor of Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region, Vitali Kim, said local authorities had decided to close all beaches to the public due to the risk of being mined.
“The sea beaches will be closed due to the intense laying of mines and the danger that this represents for people”said Kim, who, however, clarified that the beaches of the rivers and estuaries will be open to the public if there are no security threats.
The governor of Mykolaiv added that demining works on the Ukrainian beaches could take up to 70 years, since it is not possible to estimate the affected area at this time.
“It is very difficult to assess the damage caused by the Russians in the Black Sea. We cannot know for sure what they put there,” Kim concluded, referring to the fallout from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February last year.
The military offensive launched on February 24, 2022 by Russia in Ukraine has so far caused the flight of more than 14.6 million people -6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 8.1 million to European countries-, according to the latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
