Cape Verdean health authorities warn of a “constant increase” in Covid-19 cases

Despite considering that the figures are not alarming, the health authorities have drawn attention to “a certain constant increase” in cases of Covid-19 in Cape Verde.

The national director of Health of Cape Verde warned this Friday of a “constant increase” in new cases of Covid-19 and the authorities are already analyzing the possibility that another subgroup of the disease is circulating in the country.

“For about five or six epidemiological weeks we have been following a certain increase constantly, although in a not so expressive number of Covid-19 cases,” said Ângela Gomes, speaking to Lusa on the sidelines of the International Conference of Partners (CIP ), which is being carried out on the island of Boa Vista.

The health official recalled that in the history of the Covid-19 pandemic, the first case of which was announced in the country on March 20, 2020, there is no stagnation of periods or seasonality.

But given the slight increase in the number of cases in recent weeks, he said that the health authorities had already carried out an internal evaluation and had already met with all the actors involved in managing the pandemic, who received it “calmly”. and calm” all the guidelines of the new alert, to a “routine preparation”.

“It is updating procedures, resuming risk communication, which is important and we rely heavily on the media in a pedagogical, serene and peaceful way, to alert the population that there is the need for special attentionWe are resuming the use of masks in places that are still indicated by the latest recommendations, which are health facilities and places with many crowds and where necessary,” he said.

Despite considering that the numbers are not alarmÂngela Gomes said that issues related to the types of symptoms are being monitored, to see the possibility that another subtype is circulating in the country of Covid-19, but announced that the symptoms are mild.

“We have to not let things get worse and then act, we have to act accordingly, that is what the Ministry of Health is doing, activating all the equipment and all the resources that are already available in the country, we have all the conditions to deal with Covid-19, even on a routine basis,” he continued.

The national director of Health also stressed to Lusa that, at this stage, no worrisome hospitalizations or deaths caused by the disease have been recorded.

“But, anyway, with the increase in cases at the national level, in this case we are more concerned about the city of Praia, which has more than 50% of the cases, we already encourage the structures to do more tests, we ask the people who collaborate, especially the contacts of the cases, to also accept the screening and take all the precautionary and preventive measures”, he concluded, also asking for the continuation of the vaccination.

Cape Verde had, as of Thursday, 94 active cases of Covid-19, out of a total of 63,445 positive cases accumulated since March 2020, two of which resulted in 62,883 recovered cases and 413 deaths.
