This Wednesday, the Kiev City Council removed from public space a statue of the Russian writer Alexander Pushkin, which until now appeared in a square in the Ukrainian capital.

The statue was defaced with messages in favor of “decolonization” and Russian “imperialism”in reference to the time when Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire.

The dismantling of the monument is part of the efforts to “de-Russify” Ukrainian towns and cities, carried out by the country’s authorities, which legislated in this regard after the Russian military invasion.

The Russian poet, playwright and novelist Alexander Pushkin, who lived in the 19th century, is one of the most prominent figures in Russian literature, being considered one of the greatest exponents of Russian imperialism.

kyiv and other Ukrainian cities have renamed squares and streets that were dedicated to Pushkin at the time when Ukraine was subordinate to Moscow.

Statues removed in this process are often stored in museums or other municipal offices.
