The President of the Republic awards the Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada to the Navy Museum

The award, the Presidency explains, is intended to recognise “the Maritime Museum’s contribution to the preservation and promotion of Portugal’s maritime history and culture over 160 years.”

The President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, awarded the Navy Museum the title of honorary member of the Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada on Thursday.

A note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet states that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “conferred on the Navy Museum the title of Honorary Member of the Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada” and gave the insignia to the director of the museum, ship captain Alves Salgado, in an event held this Thursday.

In a statement, the Navy also announced this decoration, writing that “The distinction, awarded by letter, highlights and values ​​the contribution of the Maritime Museum to the preservation and promotion of the maritime history and culture of Portugal over 160 years.”

The Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada aims to distinguish literary, scientific and artistic merit.

“The appointment of the Navy Museum as an honorary member reflects the institution’s excellence in these areas and its valuable contribution to the knowledge and appreciation of Portuguese maritime history and the more than 700 years of the Portuguese Navy,” reads the branch’s statement.

The Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, was also present at the ceremony.
