Train accident leaves five dead in Slovakia

More than 100 people were on board the Eurocity when the accident occurred. The railway company said that none of the five fatalities were on board the train.

A train traveling between Prague and Budapest collided with a bus in Slovakia on Thursday, leaving at least five dead and five injured, according to authorities.

More than a hundred people were on board the Eurocity when the accident occurred, shortly after 5:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. in Lisbon) in the city of Nove Zamky, reported the police and the Slovak railway company ZSSK.

The dead and injured were confirmed by Slovak emergency services and ZSSK said none of the five fatalities were on board the convoy.

Video footage showed the train’s locomotive on fire and railway authorities said the bus was badly damaged in the accident.

Interior Minister Matus Sutai Estok was on his way to the scene of the accident.the police said.

The main railway line connecting Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, with Budapest has been closed until further notice and the more than 100 passengers trapped on board the train involved in the accident were being transported by bus to the border town of Sturovo with Hungary, according to ZSSK.

The driver of the locomotive, a Czech citizen, was unharmed with minor burns.the company that owns the Czech railway said. The other four injured were passengers who were following them on the train.

It is still unclear what caused the accident and authorities are investigating.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, who is in Brussels to participate in a summit of European Union leaders, He offered his condolences to the families of the victims.

“I wish the injured a speedy recovery and I thank the doctors and rescue teams for the work they did,” said Pellegrini.
