Macao lowers alert level as super typhoon moves away from territory

Super Typhoon Yagi continues to move away from Macau and the storm warning level has been lowered from 8 to 3. Rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected to continue on Friday.

Macau on Friday lowered its storm alert level from 8 to 3 as Super Typhoon Yagi moved away from the territory.

Signal 3 was broadcast at 2:00 p.m. (07:00 hours in Lisbon), and the Yagi, currently in the northern part of the South China Sea, is expected to continue moving northwestwards, towards the regions between the Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan Island, according to a statement from the Meteorological and Geophysical Services (SMG) of Macao.

However, “due to the influence of the external circulation and the Yagi rainband, Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue on Friday, with strong winds.” The SMG added, indicating that the signal should remain in place throughout the afternoon.

China is bracing for the impact of Super Typhoon Yagi on Friday, which will bring strong winds and rain to the southern regions of the country between this afternoon and Sunday.

At least 15 people have died in the Philippines, most of them on the island of Luzon where Manila is located, due to the passage of Yagi, Manila authorities said on Wednesday.

Macao issues warning as Tropical Storm Yagi approaches

Signal 3 resumes the operation of public transport and services, as well as road traffic on bridges and, progressively, maritime and air connections.

The tropical storm warning scale consists of signals 1, 3, 8, 9 and 10, the issuance of which depends on the proximity of the storm and the intensity of the wind.

In September 2018, Typhoon Mangkhut caused 40 injuries and severe flooding in the area. A year earlier, Typhoon Hato caused 10 deaths and 240 injuries.
