The European Disability Card and the European Parking Card for People with Disabilities have been approved by the European Union. The objective is to guarantee equal access to special conditions.
The Council of the European Union (EU) approved this Monday the directive that establishes the European Disability Card and the European Parking Card for People with Disabilities, which will be valid in all Member States.
This directive, which must be signed by the Council and the European Parliament and published in the Official Journal of the EU before its entry into force, provides for a period of two and a half years for Member States to include it in national legislation and three years of means to implement the measures.
The aim is to ensure equal access to special conditions or preferential treatment for people with disabilities during short stays throughout the EU.. Examples include reduced or no entry fees, priority access, assistance, and reserved parking spaces.
The European Commission proposed, in September 2023, a directive creating a European disability card and a European parking card for people with disabilities.
The Council reached an agreement with the European Parliament on 8 February 2024.
In addition, ministers adopted a directive extending these provisions to third-country nationals legally residing in EU countries, meaning that they will also be able to use these cards during short-term stays in other Member States.
