Flash floods cause five deaths in Vietnam

More than 300 homes and almost 1,300 hectares of agricultural crops were damaged by torrents of muddy water that hit and isolated several communities after Tropical Storm Trami.

Five people died and five others were injured this Thursday in flash floods that damaged homes and destroyed agricultural fields in central Vietnam, days after the arrival of Tropical Storm Trami, authorities announced.

More than 300 homes and almost 1,300 hectares of agricultural crops were damaged in the province of Quang Binh by torrents of murky water that hit and isolated several communities, the Government of Vietnam stated.

The water level is slowly falling, but several places remain flooded, officials added.

Storm Trami hit Vietnam this Sunday, after causing at least 110 deaths during its passage through the Philippines.

Vietnam, One of the countries in the world most vulnerable to climate change is affected every year, between June and November.by tropical storms and typhoons, which periodically cause flash floods and deadly landslides.

In September, northern Vietnam was devastated by Typhoon Yagi.which caused the death of 345 people and damage valued at at least 3.3 billion dollars (three billion euros).

Scientists say climate change is making the rainy season, which hits Southeast Asia between June and September, even stronger and more erratic.
