The Secretary of State for Communities, José Cesário, stated that the Government’s main priority is to guarantee the security of the Portuguese community in Venezuela. Paulo Rangel reinforced the idea.
The Secretary of State for Communities assured this afternoon in Parliament that the Portuguese Government is making “all possible efforts” to guarantee the security of the Portuguese community in Venezuela, which “is the main priority” in the relationship with that country.
When asked by deputies from different parties about the situation in Venezuela and support for the Portuguese community, José Cesário assured that this “is the Government’s top priority” in its relationship with that country.
“That is why we are making every possible effort so that, through the most diverse means, the Portuguese who want to remain in Venezuela can do so with absolute security.”he added.
José Cesário spoke at the beginning of the debate on the State Budget for 2025, after the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MNE) gave him the floor.
Regarding Portugal’s position regarding the situation in Venezuela, it was the minister himself who responded.
“On the issue of Venezuela our position is very clear,” stated the minister. “The results are not recognized under any circumstances [eleitorais]The electoral records were never presented, and even if the electoral records appeared now, they would not deserve any credibility.”he stated.
For Paulo Rangel in Venezuela “a political solution is needed to restore the prevalence of the Venezuelan people.”
Until then, Portugal condemns “all persecution, all violence and arbitrary detentions of citizens of various countries,” he said, but has “great concern” for the Portuguese community. “We have great concern for the Portuguese communities and, as a Government, we have to take care of these capital interests of all the Portuguese, that of the Portuguese who live in Venezuela,” highlighted the Minister, who inaugurated, this Monday, the debate on OE2025 in the specialty.
The Portuguese Parliament recently approved a recommendation to the Government, with the PCP voting against, to seek to guarantee the security of the Portuguese community in Venezuela, affected by a political and social crisis after the presidential elections in July.
Venezuela. Parliament wants the Government to guarantee the security of the Portuguese
The final text, already submitted to a vote in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic by the Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities commission, results from the articulation of draft resolutions presented by PSD, Chega, Bloco de Esquerda and LIVRE.
The initiative, which recommends the Government “support the fight for democracy and electoral integrity in Venezuela”, was voted against by the PCP, while all other parliamentary groups voted in favor.
The draft resolution proposes that the executive “continue to make all necessary efforts to guarantee the security of the Portuguese community residing in Venezuela” and that it does not recognize “in this context, Nicolás Maduro as winner of the presidential elections of July 28, 2024.” until the electoral records were published in a transparent manner and their audits were carried out.”
The Venezuelan authorities declared Maduro re-elected for a third presidential term, with just over 51% of the votes, but the opposition rejected this result and claimed the victory of its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, with almost 70%.
The results were disputed in the streets, with demonstrations repressed by security forces, with, according to authorities, more than 2,400 arrested, 27 dead and 192 injured.
The Portuguese Parliament also urges the Government to defend, together with the European Union (EU) and the international community, “the end of human rights violations and political persecution in Venezuela.”
