BE says that the Government responds “with errors and looks the other way” in the case of a ship suspected of transporting weapons to Israel

The party leader criticizes the Government for the entry into the port of Lisbon of a ship that, he says, is linked to the transport of military material to Israel. At night there were protests against the ship’s docking.

The Government guarantees that there is no justification for denying entry into the port of Lisbon to a ship that, according to the Left Bloc (BE), is involved in the transport of North American military material to Israel. The Executive guarantees that “no military cargo, weapons or explosives are transported” and that there are “no containers destined for Israel”, but Mariana Mortágua, coordinator of the BE, says that “the problem is not the cargo that is now on board.” and accuses the Government of “looking the other way.”

“The problem is not the cargo on board now. Will head to Morocco to meet another Maersk ship (already banned by the Spanish government when the plan was discovered) from where it will receive the illegal shipment to deliver it to the genocidal State”wrote the coordinator of the Left Bloc on the social network tweet following. “Do like Spain and comply with the resolution they approved at the UN,” he concludes.

Maria Mortágua refers to the fact that the Spanish government decided this week that two Maersk ships would not stop in Spain. According to the newspaper El País, Pedro Sánchez’s executive denied the stopover in Algeciras of two American ships suspected of transporting weapons to Israel, after, that morning, the deputy of the Spanish left-wing coalition Sumar, Enrique Santiago, reported suspicions about the ships.

Several organizations carried out a protest action this Saturday night in front of the port of Lisbon, to challenge the docking of the ship in question. “This ship will move on Monday to Morocco where it will presumably receive cargo from that same ship, a shipment of weapons destined for Israel. If this happens, Portugal will formally be on the path to genocide,” said Fabián Figueiredo at the protest in Lisbon.

The parliamentary leader of the bloc recalled that Portugal voted in the United Nations for a resolution to stop the supply of weapons to Israel, which “also implies preventing ships that participate in the illegal arms trade from the United States to Israel,” he said hours before. in statements to RTP3. “That is why the Spanish State prevented this same ship from docking. [Este navio] was involved in hundreds of illegal shipments. “There is a record around this ship,” he defended.

The allegation that the ship in question was going to dock in Lisbon came from the Palestinian BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) National Committee, which claims that the ship was involved, for months, in more than 400 illegal arms transports to Israel, through the use of the Spanish port of Algeciras.

The Left Bloc warned this Saturday of the possible involvement of the container ship in a “plan to illegally supply weapons” to Israel, questioning the Government about the authorization granted to dock. In response to the accusations, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing issued a statement stating that it would not prohibit the ship from entering the port of Lisbon. “This ship is expected to depart on the morning of November 10 without carrying any cargo. In response to a request for clarification, we were once again confirmed that no military cargo, weapons or explosives are being transported,” reads the statement sent to the editors.

According to the ministry, the ship requested authorization to dock in Lisbon to unload 144 containers, including cars, clothing, food, seeds, furniture, ceramics, glass vessels, shampoos and soaps, pictures and paintings, household appliances, power cables. optical fiber and various metals (copper ingots, iron shot, copper and zinc based alloys). The executive also guaranteed that “there are no containers destined for Israel” and that, among the cargo it transports and that will not be unloaded in Portugal, there are “three containers with aircraft components (wing parts) destined for the United States.”
