London’s High Court ruled in Sheeran’s favor in early April last year after a trial in which the singer found a pattern of abuse weakening the music sector.
The court ruled that the 31-year-old artist “intentionally or unintentionally” did not copy part of the tune by Sami Shawkry and Ross O’Donoghue (released in 2015) for use in his song Shape of You, which achieved the worldwide success and became the best selling song in the world in 2017 year. Its number of listeners has reached three billion on the Spotify platform, and the number of YouTube viewers is approximately six billion.
On Tuesday, Judge Anthony Zacharoli ruled that the plaintiffs’ lost costs and expenses were recognized at £ 916,200 (or approximately $ 1.121 million).
During the nearly ten-day trial in March 2022, two songs from the lawsuit were released, as well as a clip of an unreleased song by a British singer that was mis-released.
Ed Sheeran denied that he “borrowed” the ideas from unknown composers, in response to the plaintiffs ’attorney, who acknowledged the singer’s artistic“ genius ”but compared it to a“ magpie ”that is sometimes accused of theft.
