The owners have until this Tuesday to pay the first installment of the IMI

The approximately four million owners to whom the treasury sent this year a receipt for the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) have until this Tuesday to pay the first installment or the entire tax.

The IMI payment rules currently in force determine that the tax is paid in one go, during the month of May, when it is less than 100 euros, dividing the amount into two or three installments depending on whether it exceeds, respectively, 100 or 500 euros.

According to official data from the Tax and Customs Authority (AT) sent to Lusa, this year 4,031,117 IMI collection notes were issuedof which 920,660 had a value of less than 100 euros, which gave rise to a single installment of the tax whose payment term ends at the end of today.

For those with IMI values greater than 100 euros, the tax was divided into two or three installments, the first of which had to be paid during the month of May.

Even so, since 2019 it is possible for owners to pay the entire tax with this first installment, simply using the full payment reference that appears on the billing note.

According to the same AT data, this year 2,434,314 collection promissory notes were issued with a value greater than or equal to 100 euros and less than 500 euros; and 679,435 above 500 euros.

Anyone who finds themselves in this situation and has no intention of having taken advantage of the functionality available since 2019, you can pay the second installment in November. If the IMI is divided into three installments, the next payments are made in August and November.

The IMI rates are set annually by the municipalities, in a range between 0.3% and 0.45% (for urban buildings and land for construction), and it is up to them to decide on adherence to the family IMI, a mechanism that grants a discount to resident families, or in the application of higher rates in vacant or dilapidated buildings.

According to data from the Tax and Customs Authority, this year (for the 2020 IMI) the group of municipalities that decided to join the family IMI, attributing a reduction in IMI to families with dependents, increased by 8%, to 253.

These decisions of the municipalities are communicated to the TA, and based on this information the tax authorities calculate the amount that each owner must pay in IMI.
