Sriracha hot sauce and peanut butter are the latest additions to President Biden’s list of hard-to-find foods amid the crisis in America’s supply chain, which includes baby food and, more recently, other products such as tampons.
The country is still grappling with a baby food shortage after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) closed the Abbott Nutrition factory in Sturgis, Michigan, in February to investigate a suspected bacterial outbreak at the factory. The investigation began after four babies fell ill.
“The February voluntary recall included four complaints about infants consuming infant formula made from this plant – common bacteria in the environment. Two babies became ill; two died tragically,” Abbott wrote in an update on May 11.
However, Abbott said that “after a careful review of all available data, there is no evidence to link our formulas to these childhood diseases.” Although it finally reopened this month, it had to close again due to flooding.
Meanwhile, tampons are in short supply as Procter & Gamble, which accounts for nearly half of the menstrual care market, acknowledges that consumers may temporarily not find the products they need.
“The Tampax team is doing buffering 24/7 to meet the growing demand for our products,” the company said in a statement, according to NBC News. “We’re working with our retail partners to maximize availability, which has increased significantly over the last few months.”
Three states, Alaska, Hawaii and West Virginia were particularly hit, according to reports.
But that’s not all. Huy Fong Foods, which makes the ever-famous Sriracha hot sauce, said in a statement that it is facing an “unprecedented chilli shortage” and is still working on solving it. [sic] is caused by many rapid events, including unexpected failures in the spring pepper crop. ”
David Kloss, professor of supply chain management at Michigan State University, told MLive that many factors play a role.
“One of them is the lack of raw materials, packaging, and food ingredients that go into hot sauce,” he said, according to the publication.
Peanut butter is another food that may be scarce because Americans fear that other essential foods may be more scarce.
“At the end of May, JM Smucker Co. recalled about 50 Jif creamy, crunchy and natural peanut butter products. Due to potential salmonella contamination. Sixteen diseases in a dozen states are associated with recall, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
