Portugal leads the decline in fixed internet prices in Europe with a drop of 4.7%

The Association of Electronic Communications Operators (Apritel) said today that Portugal “Leaders in the fall of fixed internet prices” in Europewith a fall of 4.7% in the last 12 months, compared to an increase of 0.9% in the EU27.

“Portugal is leading the way in reducing the prices of fixed internet services. On average in the last 12 months, prices in Portugal for fixed internet services decreased by 4.7%”advances the association in a statement.

According to Apitrel, “parallel to this strong reduction in prices, the high-speed fixed network coverage rate increased, reaching in 2021 92.5% coverage of all accommodations.

The most recent Eurostat data, referring to May 2022, demonstrate once again the strong competitive dynamics of the Portuguese electronic communications market. In a context of a general increase in prices in the economy, national communications services contribute to lower inflationary pressure in the national economy, through an evolution below observed inflation”, he maintains.

Apritel warns, once again, that “the price evolution comparisons endorsed by the IHCP [Índice Harmonizado de Preços no Consumidor] Eurostat cannot be used to compare price levels between countries, only their evolution, and with due precautions”.

As he explains, “the biases of the analysis are greater the longer the time series is, since the IHCP changes the weights of each component, from year to year, which imposes limitations on the conclusions that can be drawn from long historical series. the same index.

This type of analysis is only relevant to themacroeconomic assessmentsLike the ones of inflationfor which the IHCP was created”, he adds.
