Ukraine. Zelensky says that kyiv has started exporting electricity to the EU

Ukraine has begun to export electricity “in a significant way” to the EU through Romania, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced.

“An important step has been taken in our rapprochement with the European Union” on Thursday, said, Thursday night, the leader of Ukraine, a country that last week received the status of a candidate for accession to the EU, approved by all 27 member states.

“This is only a first step,” Zelensky stressed, in his usual video address to the Ukrainian population. “We are preparing to increase exports,” he added.

The Ukrainian president argued that “Ukrainian electricity can replace a considerable part of the Russian gas consumed by Europeans”.

“It is not just a question of export earnings for us, it is a question of security for all of Europe,” he insisted.

Ukraine was connected to the Russian electricity grid until the beginning of the invasion, on February 24, and then operated autonomously until mid-March, when it was connected to the European grid, which should help the country to maintain its operation at despite the war.

“From today, Ukraine can export electricity to the EU market”, said, on Thursday, the president of the European Commission, on the social network twitter.

Ursula von der Leyen described this step as a victory for both sides. “This will bring an additional source of electricity to the EU. And a much-needed recipe for Ukraine.”
