Several protests are planned for this Friday, due to the closure of the CGD branches in Lisbon and Barreiro and BCP in Montalegre, at a time when banking activity is reducing its retail network.

The Union of Workers of Companies of the CGD Group (STEC) said on August 12 that the CGD management intends to “close another 23 branches in mainland Portugal” this month.
STEC learned that the management of CGD, after the recent announcement of the huge profit of 486 million [de euros]in the first half of 2022, decided to further reduce costs and close 23 more branches, during the current month of August, with greater incidence in the Lisbon and Porto regions,” the union said in a statement sent to the newsrooms. .
The union stated thatI don’t know the reasons” for this, and that the desire to “reduce expenses” entails the “devaluation of CGD’s capacity as a public bank”, pointing out that there is “an inevitable congestion of the remaining branches in these areas”.
Likewise, STEC highlights that since 2012 there has already been a “decrease” of 3,300 workers and the closure of “more than 300 branches” of Caixa in Portugal.
BCP, according to information from the results release for the first half of this year, said in turn that “it has continued to implement a series of measures with a view to maintaining disciplined management of costs, including the resizing of the network of branches in the activity in Portugal, which evolved from 458 branches as of June 30, 2021 to 415 branches as of June 2022with a generalized impact on the different items that make up other administrative expenses”.
