UTAO coordinator calls for calm to those who want to tax excessive profits. There are countries that have to rescue companies

The idea that Portugal follows other countries in the creation of taxes on excess profits does not please Rui Baleiras, coordinator of the UTAO (Technical Unit for Budget Support), the entity that works with the parliamentary budget and finance committee to support technician in budgetary matters and public finances.

In an interview with Observador, which will be published and broadcast on Radio this Monday, Rui Baleiras is “against” this measure, giving various arguments “that discourage the taxation of so-called excessive or extraordinary benefits.”

Recalling that Germany has already had to bail out the electricity company Uniper and that both Finland and Sweden have already had to make billions in lines of credit available to energy companies, Rui Baleiras sees the risk that these additional taxes could help financially worsen the situation of the electric power companies to the point that the State had to throw itself into their salvation. “I would advise calm to those in Portugal who think that because the last two quarters were great for earnings for some big companies, we are going to look for the dough. They are only legitimizing that two quarters from now we have to do what bailing out of any of these companies. So calm down, ”she underlines.

In France, EDF is also being nationalized, and the French State has contributed 10,000 million euros to this company.
