The authorities of the United States of America and Jordan have signed a memorandum of understanding on a strategic partnership between the two countries, which includes the provision of $ 10.15 billion in assistance by Washington to Amman over 7 years ending in 2029.
The MoU aims to support Jordan’s economic development and meet the country’s water and energy needs, as well as help it deal with the refugee problem.
In this regard, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, during a joint press conference with his American counterpart Anthony Blinken, said that “the memorandum of understanding is of key importance for the economic development of his country”, noting that it is “unprecedented in terms of its duration and the amount of support it includes.”
The minister noted “the basic support that Washington is providing to the Omani authorities to best deal with refugee cases, border security, drug control and pressure on limited resources.”
In turn, Blinken pointed out that “the memorandum of understanding is evidence of the strength of relations between Jordan and the United States”, pointing to “Jordan’s role in strengthening regional security and stability”, describing the Jordanian military as a “primary ally” of the United States, and given that “The unprecedented level of military funding contained in the MoU will enhance the strength and capabilities of the Jordanian armed forces.
The authorities of Jordan and the United States signed the first memorandum of understanding on a strategic relationship for a period of five years in 2008, followed by another memorandum of understanding in 2015, and in 2018 a third memorandum ending at the end of that September.
