European Union energy ministers will hold an extraordinary meeting in Brussels on Friday to discuss new measures to be taken to curb rising electricity and gas prices.
An Anatolian correspondent said on Thursday that the meeting will take place at the invitation of the Czech Republic, which holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.
He explained that energy ministers will discuss the energy crisis in Europe and will discuss proposals that include measures to reduce the demand for electricity during peak hours in order to reduce electricity prices.
The meeting is also scheduled to exchange views on additional policy options to reduce high gas prices.
The EU Commission prepared a non-paper containing new steps and additional measures to be taken with regard to natural gas and presented it to Member States.
Energy ministers are expected to actively discuss the issue of limiting natural gas supplies.
The countries of the bloc are experiencing an economic crisis that has begun to cast a social shadow on the middle and poor classes in the form of protests against the refusal to pay the price for Russia’s war with Ukraine.
As the West supported Ukraine in the war against Russia, the latter cut more than 80 percent of the total natural gas supplied to the bloc.
In addition, the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, linking Russia and Germany and from there to several European countries, has been suspended since last month until further notice for what Russia’s Gazprom has described as technical.
