A Chinese vase valued at two thousand euros was auctioned in France for 7.7 million euros. With the seller’s fees, the final purchase price was 9.12 million euros.
In the city of Fontainebleau, the Auctioneers stunned by ‘bidding war’ and bids from around 30 bidders, mostly Chinese. But, after all, what led to an “ordinary” vase being sold for almost four thousand times its value? It is simple. Buyers were convinced it was a rare artifact from the 18th century, The Guardian reports.
The blue and white porcelain vase, decorated with dragons and clouds, was inherited by a woman living in French overseas territory. The seller, who declined to be named, assured Osenat auctioneers that the vase originally belonged to her grandmother, an avid Parisian collector.
The auctioneer described the vase as “pretty common” and said it dated from the 20th century. For Osenat specialists, if the arfetato were 200 years older, it would have been extremely rare.
The vase was purchased by a Chinese buyer., which prides itself on “having been in possession” of a piece of history. Cédric Laborde, director of the auction house, said he believes the vase will go on display.
